No More Waiting List for Rail Passengers: VIKALP, Upgradation Schemes Introduced
In a recent statement to the Rajya Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared several passenger-friendly measures taken by Indian Railways. These initiatives aim to make train travel more convenient and accessible for all passengers.
On-the-Spot Ticket Upgrades
Good news for last-minute travelers! Train staff can now allow passengers to board reserved coaches if there are empty seats. Passengers need to have a minimum class ticket and pay any difference in fare. This flexibility helps utilize available space and accommodates more travelers.
Tackling Ticketless Travel
The Railways is serious about preventing ticketless travel. Regular and surprise checks are conducted to catch passengers traveling without proper tickets.
Meeting Increased Demand
Indian Railways is keeping a close eye on waiting list numbers for all trains. When they see high demand, they take steps to help more people travel:
- Adding more coaches to existing trains
- Running special trains
- Introducing new train routes
- Increasing how often some trains run
These changes are made when it’s possible to do so without disrupting the railway schedule.
New Schemes for Passenger Convenience
Two new schemes have been introduced to help passengers get confirmed seats:
- VIKALP (Alternate Train Accommodation Scheme): If you opt for this, you might get a confirmed seat on a different train going to the same destination.
- Upgradation Scheme: If you’re on a waiting list for a lower class and there are empty seats in a higher class, you might get upgraded for free.
Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that improving passenger services is an ongoing process. Indian Railways continues to work on making train travel better for everyone.
